Temporary fix:
Grab dapper libsane from:
http://www.mirror.ac.uk/mirror/archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/s/sane-backends/libsane_1.0.17-1ubuntu4_i386.deb
then as root
dpkg -i sane-backends/libsane_1.0.17-1ubuntu4_i386.deb

Then to prevent the package changing, do
aptitude hold libsane

I have exactly the same problem. My scanner works perfectly in Dapper, but it is not detected in Edgy. Same problem under Debian testing...

I have same problem. Hope this is fixed, I'm using the temporary fix and obviously because of this every time I log on to Ubuntu, I'm told there is an update for libsane.

Hello,

I'm having the same problem with my Epson Perfection 2400. sane-find-scanner finds the scanner, permissions are correct (the same problem occurs as root) but 'scanimage -L' does not find anything, although with SANE_DEBUG_EPSON=256 set, I get

[epson] attach_one_usb()
[epson] SANE Epson Backend v0.2.45 - 2000-01-09
[epson] attach(, 3)
[epson] attach: opening
[epson] attach_one_usb(libusb:003:004)
[epson] SANE Epson Backend v0.2.45 - 2000-01-09
[epson] attach(libusb:003:004, 3)
[epson] attach: opening libusb:003:004
[epson] Found valid EPSON scanner: 0x4b8/0x11b (vendorID/productID)
...
[epson] scanner model: GT-9300

and with libsane-extras installed, I get

[epkowa] SANE EPKOWA Backend 1.16.0-3 - 2005-06-29
[epkowa] attach(libusb:003:004, 3)
[epkowa] attach: opening libusb:003:004
[epkowa] Found valid EPSON scanner: 0x4b8/0x11b (vendorID/productID)
...
[epkowa] scanner model: Perfection 2400

but in both cases I get no "non-debug" output, and xsane does not find any scanners (just exits again after searching).

The above workaround does not help either. My scanner worked fine with Dapper, though.

Just checked against Feisty hurd 2. Problem persists exactly as for Edgy.

Same problem. Scanner doesn't work in Feisty, but works well in Dapper and Debian Etch.
To fix the problem I had to install libsane_1.0.17-1ubuntu4_i386.deb as Nick_Hill said on 2006-10-23.
