Bug Description

I recently upgraded my system from Ubuntu 16.04 to Ubuntu 18.04. The application is now very unstable. I often have to kill the process through the system monitor and restart it in order to get it to work again. Sometimes the window that the list of items pops up in is larger than the screen size and I cannot scroll to lower items to the menu items at the bottom.

Those issues are new as I have been running Diodon 18.04 without any problems.

Some question I hope will identify the issue:

* Have you installed Diodon from ppa or official repository? If from ppa best remove it and install it again as it is now in the offical repo.
* Could it be that your are running Wayland instead of X11? Wayland might still cause some issue and X11 is more stable.

Output of following command would help:
env | grep XDG

A screenshot might also be helpful if the problem persists.

As far as I remember I installed from the repository. When I run apt install diodon I get the message diodon is already the newest version (1.8.0-1).

I am running X11. Here is the output -
XDG_MENU_PREFIX=gnome-
XDG_VTNR=2
XDG_SESSION_ID=3
XDG_SESSION_TYPE=x11
XDG_DATA_DIRS=/usr/share/ubuntu:/usr/local/share:/usr/share:/var/lib/snapd/desktop:/var/lib/snapd/desktop
XDG_SESSION_DESKTOP=ubuntu
XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=ubuntu:GNOME
XDG_SEAT=seat0
XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=/run/user/1000
XDG_CONFIG_DIRS=/etc/xdg/xdg-ubuntu:/etc/xdg

One thing that I noticed is that if I access diodon by clicking on the icon in the panel at the top of the screen then I see the problem. If I use the hot key then the list is sized properly for the screen. I changed the hot key from CTRL-ALT-v to CTRL-ALT-d and the behavior of the hot key has been more consistent although there are many times that I have to try multiple times with the hot key before the list comes up.

I am including a screenshot when using the icon. I do not seem to be able to take a screenshot when the list is activated through the hot key.

Thanks for your help.

How many items do you allow in your history? Seems to be fairly long ;).

It could be that the following extension solves the problem with the application indicator support:
https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/615/appindicator-support/

Could you try this out?

In terms of shortcut issue. I think that's still the same issue from https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=699679 and workaround fix in https://bugs.launchpad.net/diodon/+bug/1630375 doesn't seem to work anymore.

What I noticed though is when I press Ctrl+Alt for a little bit and then only press V it usually appears. Kind of annoying but currently do not know how to fix this as the error is in libgtk itself.

Maybe best way is to give up on the menu pop libgtk doesn't really like without a parent anymore and move to https://github.com/RedHatter/diodon-gnome-indicator which might be of interest to you as well.

I configured diodon for 100 items in the history.

I installed appindicator-support but it did not seem to make any difference. I tried to install diodon-gnome-indicator from the instructions on the site but I could not seem to get it going.

Seems that the application indicator support doesn't support scrolling so the number of history items would need to be lower than the screen size as a workaround.

It is odd that the gnome indicator is not working for you. But Timothy would be happy if you could file a issue so this can be tackled.

The way forward will certainly be to use the Gnome Shell Indicator as the application indicator and menu pop are not really first class citizen in Gnome Shell and therefore do not really have good support.

Changed in diodon:
status: New → Confirmed

You can try executing diodon from Terminal or gnome Alt + F2.

Type "diodon" in any of those and it will open diodon window with scroll options.

Is not best but it works.
