3) What is expected to happen in LibreOffice Impress via the Terminal:

cd ~/Desktop && wget https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libreoffice/+bug/846381/+attachment/2383008/+files/impress-letters.odp && loimpress -nologo impress-letters.odp

Note: this only happens if 'hardware acceleration' is enabled in the options. However, with out this fontwork is fuzzy with jagged edges.

Here is a sample impress file.

The problem can't be to do with graphics drivers as my laptop has an intel card with open source drivers, and the desktop has a nvida card with proprietary drivers. Both have coloured-in fontwork letters in libreoffice if 'Hardware Acceleration' is enabled. Shadows of fontwork also appear distorted.

As in upstream bug on launchpad:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libreoffice/+bug/846381
Letters of Fontwork such as 'O' appeared coloured in on slideshow mode, if they use gradient or bitmap. This only happens when hardware acceleration (anti-aliasing) is enabled, however without this fontwork is blocky with jagged edges. Fontwork shadows are also distorted in slideshow mode. This happens in all Libreoffice versions.

Joshua O'Leary, the issue you are reporting is an upstream one and it would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug to the developers of the software by following the instructions at http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/BugReport . If you have done so, please tell us the number of the upstream bug (or the link), so we can add a bugwatch that will inform us about its status. Thanks in advance.

This bug has been filed under the Linux (ubuntu) build of Libreoffice, not the Windows build. A bug in the Linux build does not necessarily cause a bug in the Windows version, as the executable code is completely different between platforms.

Found a workaround for this bug when using gradients, that you have to apply to each fontwork object in turn:

[1] Make a fontwork object and set fill to gradient
[2] On the object:
    Right-click>Area...>Area>Untick 'Automatic' under 'Increments.
