Bug Description
One hears and sees many comments (both aloud and written in code files) of the form "this is just a workaround until the deriver is fixed." The more we use it, the more limitations of the current deriver we encounter, and a lot of time goes into finding ways around them.
Redesigning it would entail investing time up front in exchange for time saved in the future.
