Bug Description

This report is specific to Intrepid Beta amd64 desktop.

The Stop playback hotkey worked in Gutsy and Hardy, and has ceased working in Intrepid. The expected action is that it will stop playing audio. It no longer does this in Intrepid. The information provided in this report is relative to: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/HotkeyResearch

Additional information is provided relative to: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies

These are notes on the HotkeyResearch wiki page methods:

1. Method 1. Cannot use. The Keyboard Shortcuts no longer provide magic numbers.

2. Method 2. This method sucessfully provided information which is attached to this comment (hotkey-log.txt). Although this method did provide information, X no longer accepted keystrokes and it was necessary to logout using the mouse and log back in. hotkey-setup was properly restarted as directed, so this is probably a bug in an of itself.

3. Method 3. Cannot use. /var/log/acpid is no longer present. I was able to determine an acpi event was not generated when pressing the key by using acpi_listen.

4. Method 4. Did not provide information. Pressing the key did not generate reportable key release events using xev per the directions.

Nothing should have changed here, but I am suspecting the hotkey itself is still emitting the proper signal..

Try this:

killall gnome-settings-daemon
xev

With gnome-settings-daemon not running, do you see the hotkey in xev? If so, that means it's not a kernel bug.

This laptop is not shipping with 8.10 or any later release. Dropping the Dell project.

Thanks Mario. I won't add the Dell project to any additional Inspiron 1420 issues. I didn't realize the project policy was to only support the release the laptop was shipped under.

Killing the gnome-settings-daemon did result in a KeyRelease using xev. These are the results:

KeyRelease event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x3200001,
    root 0x13b, subw 0x3200002, time 348823, (39,30), root:(714,83),
    state 0x0, keycode 136 (keysym 0xff69, Cancel), same_screen YES,
    XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
    XFilterEvent returns: False

Also I would have expected the key action to be XF86AudioStop and not Cancel.

Marking linux invalid, and adding acpi-support and hal (copying Bug #267682)

Does not appear to be a kernel issue.

Only FN+F1, volume up, volume down and "Home" keys work
multimedia keys dont work, but they appear well configured in "System > preferences > Keyboard Shortcuts"
Power key doesn't launch 'ShutDown Dialog', instead launches 'Logout Dialog'

PS: sorry for my poor english ;)
