Bug Description

I'm experiencing inconsistent behaviour around sound. Using an up-to-date 16.04 on a new Dell XPS 13.

Symptoms:
- approx 4 out 5 times I boot, there is no sound output option recognised (i.e,. when in Settings->Sound, the "play sound through" list in the lower left is empty). 1 out of 5 times that list will say have an option for "built in analogue stereo". I can't get any sound when the built in system not recognised
- sound will never play out of the headphones attached to the laptop. On occasion sound will play out of the laptop speakers.
- when attached to an external monitor with speakers, I can play sound through the monitor, both through the monitor speakers and headphones attached to the monitor (monitor attached via USB 3 -> HDMI).

I seem to also be seeing this problem. I purchased the XPS 13/2016 (ie, skylake based), and this week dist upgraded to 16.04.

My machine now boots without audio support for the 3.5mm jack.

I wondner if this bug is relevant: bug #1551880

As a point of info, I re-imaged the same machine from #1, creating an entirely clean, stock, install of 16.04. Audio works well.

As a quick check, could you try installing the oem-audio-hda-daily-dkms package from https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-audio-dev/+archive/ubuntu/alsa-daily/+packages?field.name_filter=&field.status_filter=published&field.series_filter=xenial ? This is a backport driver using latest upstream code and backported for Xenial.

My issue has also gone away - must have been fixed in a recent update. This can be closed from my perspective - not sure about John's.

@John,

According to the comment #2, may I close this bug now?
