Have you tried recovering the machine and checking to see if the problem was fixed and if it reappears? Without steps to reproduce it could just as easily be hardware failure. If you can reinstall and attempt to reproduce we can figure this out, but without more information I recommend this bug be closed.

As Brian says, if this bug can't be reproduced, we're most likely dealing with a hardware problem here. Marking as Incomplete.

The built-in speakers are controled by the 'Speaker' device in Volume Control. Are you sure it is not muted?

I am experiencing a loss of audio output regarding my Ubuntu Mini 9. Perhaps the cause is similar to cherokee's, perhaps not. Bene and Chidester, I suspect this issue is affecting more than a few, and I believe it has something to do with attempting to install i386 packages on the Mini's lpia system. My audio became disabled immediately after I "forced" install of some i386 packages. It would be nice to be able to fix the problem without a complete system restoration.

Exactly, what packages did you install? It could be that those specific packages created some conflicts, more than the fact they were 386 ones...

I too have lost all sound in addition to my battery charge light being non-existent, my screen saver hanging up, the Open org suite doing a shutdown when trying to save a file, no bluetooth recognition though it does show the connection as active, and unable to upgrade through the Update manager saying that the repositories couldn't be found. Have only installed the updates, no other outside software, no external disk drives, speaker controls are not muted and turned all the way up. No sound not even on startup or logoff. I hear your frustration! Oh wait, no I can't because I don't have any sound!

Andrea,
Did your update complete successfully? There should have been two. One that was around 30Mbs and another around 200Mb. Please also attach your sources.list and any file in your /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ directory.

Thanks

Okay, I think you will need to be a little more simplistic with me when giving terminal commands since neither of the above worked either on their own or with sudo in front of them.

Also, I am still running 8.04 as I cannot go any further in the update process since it cannot locate the repositories.

Okay, through researching, I found a command to run for the sources list.

Thank you Andrea.
If you type: cd /etc/apt/sources.list.d
and then: ls
Do you see a file there or is your prompt returned to you?

andrea@andrea:~$ cd /etc/apt/sources.list.d
andrea@andrea:/etc/apt/sources.list.d$ ls
andrea@andrea:/etc/apt/sources.list.d$

Is this what you mean? If so, then I guess the prompt is returned to me?

Hope this helps?
