drop status icon use for GNOME 3

Bug Description

The notification area and usage of status icons is deprecated in GNOME 3.

It seems that deja-dup shows an icon during the backup operation. Tooltip shows state (eg. "Preparing..."). And left and right click show a menu of "Show progress" (toggle), "Resume later".

My recommendation is to use notifications to indicate a backup operation is occurring in the background. And you may offer an action on that notification to "Resume later". The GNOME 3 notification servers support persistence of notifications so that the message won't time out and disappear.

Please see:

Thanks.

Hi, William. I'm happy to do this, but do you know how I detect if I'm in an environment that uses non-transient notifications? I would only want to drop usage in such environments, keeping the status icon if notifications are transient.

The wiki page about it does not mention this issue.

Hi Michael,

I've added a note to the wiki page about this. Basically you can
check the server capabilities like so:
http://git.gnome.org/browse/libnotify/tree/tests/test-persistence.c

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Thanks,
Jon

Unfortunately this change disabled the tray status icon in Cinnamon, too. I've filed bug 1155929 to get it re-enabled in Cinnamon.

I am on deja-dup 34.0 and gnome 3.16 and I don't see any "persistent notification" when there is a backup running, has this feature been implemented yet or is there just no way to see progress on gnome desktops anymore?

I haven't seen a persistent notification on Gnome for a long long time. Currently I use Deja-dup 34.1 on Gnome 3.18.

Me too, not being able to monitor a scheduled backup's progress is quite annoying. Bring back the persistent notification!

Just switched back to GNOME from Unity, backups ran today and I got a notification about it starting, but no way to view progress. Any work being done with this?

Also, when clicking on the notification icon, it attempted to start a *new* backup, and gave me an error message that it couldn't start because a backup operation was already running. How can I bring up the deja-dup UI to see *what* it is doing, what it's currently backing up, options to cancel or postpone, etc? The UI is really lacking here.

If it is not feasible (due to problem difficulty or time or resources) to bring up the deja-dup progress window somehow later, all changes should be reverted that cause backups to start without opening the progress window at the beginning (like it used to work on Ubuntu Unity).

There is really no problem having the progress window open all the time, however it is a significant problem not having a progress window at all and not being able to open it.

Folks, please open new bugs for such issues. But as it happens, recent treleases of deja dup also address notifications in gnome 3 being a little wonky. You can now click on the notification to bring up the backup window.
