Bug Description

Please exclude directories with cache directory tags:
http://www.brynosaurus.com/cachedir/

I would suggest that the best way to do this would be to put the intelligence into duplicity and create some --exclude-tagged-caches option. Then deja-dup could simply use this option.

I have therefore submitted a bug request to Duplicity as Bug #581260

Yeah, I guess this would be nice. Ideally people would use the XDG spec. But I agree that this should be done in duplicity. Will wait for that to be added.

Migrating applications to support XDG specs is one thing and could be done by sending out patches, but could deja-dup by default exclude $XDG_CACHE_HOME and $HOME/.thumbnails. All the data in those directories is dynamic and can be regenerated. It is pointless to put it on "tape" or to waste bandwidth to send it to a remote location.

Hans, Deja Dup already skips those. See the Deja Dup manual (Help->Contents) for a list of directories quietly excluded by default.

Your correct, they seem to be excluded by default since the 9-release. This only leaves submitting patches to other applications to follow the XDG-guidelines. I think that may be easier and safer then to try do something smart in deja-dup. It will go bad in the long run and people will complain that deja-dup does strange things.

Is this something for the one hundred paper cuts project? Also since the GNOME project has something like it on the roadmap (it is still uncertain).

Closing. Most apps have moved to .cache, and the cachedir page is busted at the time of writing.
