By and large, one would want hidden files (preferences, configuration, and such). So not a high priority for me, but noted.

This could be a duplicate of bug 374274, especially if you included a couple of optional defaults that matched standard hidden files.

thx wil, your post:

may be one solution, but the better one may be something clickable - it's easier for not so much experienced users to click something than to exclude *.* - I don't even know how to :-)

So I think it's not a duplicate.

Personally, I just want to compress, encrypt and backup my files. Settings are not a priority.

I have an use case a little bit tricky.. I want to backup a folder with a lot of SVN checkouts, and each checkout and its subfolders all have an .svn folder, which I don't want to backup.
The suggested workaround of explicitly exclude each hidden folder is infeasible, since there are thousands of them.

Having an option to exclude every ".svn" directory on all directory levels would be awesome to me!
