Bug Description

Hi,

I'v been using Déjà Dup to create backups on an external USB hard disk drive. Backups would be made weekly after the USB drive got connected automatically. Just perfect!

But for some reason this stopped working.

Déjà Dup reports "Backup Failed - volume doesn't implement mount" in a dialog window with only one option "Close". The backup volume mounts just fine and I can browse it via Nautilus.

Déjè Dup also reports this when I try to open Backups via the Settings panel so I cannot change the backup location or any other settings!

I tried creating a deja-dup.log with "DEJA_DUP_DEBUG=1 deja-dup --backup | tail -n 1000 > /tmp/deja-dup.log" and the same message window appears but it renders an empty log file.

$ lsb_release -d
Description: Ubuntu 14.10
(it's Ubuntu GNOME actually)

$ dpkg-query -W deja-dup duplicity
deja-dup 32.0-0ubuntu1
duplicity 0.6.23-1ubuntu5

Also, apart from the empty /tmp/deja-dup.log file, there is nothing in dmesg or syslog related to this...

Update: Yes there IS a message in syslog...

kernel: [ 5263.280687] traps: gnome-control-c[5142] general protection ip:7fdd2155ba93 sp:7fff781b83c0 error:0 in libgtk-3.so.0.1200.2[7fdd213a9000+538000]

Also: a message in Shell will pop up saying "Backup will begin when a network connection becomes available" before the error message dialog window. Which is weird because I'm not using any network storage. Could https://bugs.launchpad.net/deja-dup/+bug/982316 be related?

Update 2 :

Did a complete reset of dejadup settings with
dconf reset -f "/org/gnome/deja-dup/"

Then a
sudo apt-get purge deja-dup duplicity
and reinstalled again...

Still nothing :(

UPDATE: After not using Back-ups for a while, I tried again and this time a Add Amazon S3 Account window came up. I have no Amazon account so I hit Cancel but after that, nothing...

The errors in the log files have not changed:

This bug randomly started affecting me for a backup on an AFP share, from Ubuntu 18.04, using Déjà Dup 40.1. I had been able to create the initial backup, but several days later it was no longer possible to access it.

I was able to solve it by removing the snap package and downgrading to the DEB version that is included with Ubuntu.

Now that I look at the syslog, I realize that deja-dup was not actually interpreting the network location and trying to "mount" the AFP filesystem as a path in my home directory (slightly redacted the log for my privacy):

Apr 23 06:38:41 minipc deja-dup[20301]: BackendRemote.vala:82: Containing mount for file /home/USER/afp:/USER@SERVER/home/USER not found

And, of course, it had created the whole afp:/... directory tree in my home directory.

David, I’d be interested if trying the snap again works for you - I fixed a bug in the snap packaging that would cause that error to appear, but it was snap specific. So probably not the same root cause as this original ticket.

‘snap refresh deja-dup’ should ensure you have the fix.

Closing this as likely fixed. Please reopen if you still see it.
