Bug Description

I have a lot of compilation albums in my library, and the current way the library plugin groups files (by artist tag) makes it really awkward if I want to listen to a particular album through the library browser.

I'd like to request that if a track has an 'album_artist' tag (which seems to be at least more standard than Quod Libet's 'disc_number' vs iTunes' 'PARTINSET' tags) to use that for organization rather than the 'artist' tag?

(Maybe it should be a preferences option?)

I was about to report this too. Another fix would be to allow the user to toggle the ordering of the tracks between sorted by artist and sorted by album.

Complex players like rhythmbox will allow you to order tracks by any column, but I'm not sure that any of the possible orderings other than by artist or by album are actually useful. Some of them might come in handy now and then but I don't think you'd use them regularly.

I think Muine's Play Album window groups all the tracks by album and then orders the albums by artist name and then, within an artist, by album name. That might work also. I don't remember how the sorting works in Muine's other window, the Play Song one.

Development version now uses the "album artist" tag when available, thanks for the report.

Hi,

this would be really great for my purpose, too. But I just can't find a way to set that tag with any open source software. It seems, that the "album artist" tag is just an apple invention. See: http://www.id3.org/iTunes

Could you make it possible to display the library sorted by album-names? That would be really great.

Thanks,
Arthur

Arthur: anything that will let you set custom id3v2 tags should do the trick. I used Quod Libet (http://www.sacredchao.net/quodlibet/) as my audio player for a while, and their standalone tag editor, Ex Falso, is the best OS app for that I've found.

Ok. Installed another audio-player to be able to set the tag. Set the "album artist" tag for 5 compilations with "Various Artists". But still the library doesn't show an artist "Various Artists", either after rescanning the library-folder, nor after removing the folder and adding it as a new one afterwards. What have I done wrong?

Does the feature described here work for anyone? In my library-view is no item "Various Artists", allthough I set id-tags "album artist", "albumartist", "album artists". Can somebody help me?

It depends on the file format. Take a look at this table:

http://wiki.musicbrainz.org/PicardTagMapping

The row "Album Artist" contains the tag name for all file formats.
