xz-utils package is really, really old and should be updated to 5.2.2 with multi-core support

Willy is currently using a really old version of xz-utils. The latest version at this time is 5.2.2, released in September 2015. With multi-core support it adds an important feature for xz.

Glancing at the changelog, there is so much fixes and some new features too, that upgrading that package widely used is hugely awaited. Hopes to get the 5.2.1 version asap.

This is being discussed in Debian already. Please don’t do this separately. Instead, work with the Debian maintainer to do this, then do a SyncRequest.

The Debian maintainer is too busy to take care of the package. There's a user-contributed packaging at git://git.breakpoint.cc/bigeasy/xz-utils-debian.git that the maintainer gave a nod of approval and then sat on it for lamost half a year now. This should have shipped in Xenial already. Ubuntu should act now instead of waiting endlessly for an important feature in xz (multi-threading to take advantage of multiple cores to do the heavy lifting).

It has been packaged into ppa:ricotz/staging and seems working as expected. Maybe it could be uploaded to 'proposed' archive.

Just to be clear, that PPA has version 5.2.2 but I don't think it's based off the git repo referenced above.

xz-utils 5.2.2-1.2 was synced from Debian and is available in Ubuntu Zesty.
