Bug Description

Binary package hint: pitivi

The environment is not correctly set up. When you run pitivi in a console, the error message reports
<code>
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/pitivi", line 118, in <module>
    _run_pitivi()
  File "/usr/bin/pitivi", line 111, in _run_pitivi
    import pitivi.application as ptv
ImportError: No module named pitivi.application

</code>

There is a work around.

sudo gedit /usr/bin/pitvi

Find the following line:

LIBDIR = '/usr/lib'

Below the line, add the following line:

PYTHONPATH='/usr/lib/pitivi/python:/usr/share/doc/pitivi$ pitivi'

Save the changes.

Result: pitivi works from menu or command line.

Are you sure you didn't install pitivi manually before or something like that ? This should never happen with 0.13.4

No, I did not install the program before.

I did, however, update Ubuntu from an earlier installation. That may
have caused some problems. I don't know if a fresh install would have
the same results.

It works well with the workaround I described.

Workaround doesn't work for me :-(

I have this error on Ubuntu 10.04 on an IBM R51 Thinkpad. PiTiVi was NOT installed manually.

One thing, though: The install was from an Alternate CD, not a Live CD. Don't note if that might make a difference, but perhaps.

The workaround in the package description does NOT work for me.

If I write this in a terminal before running the program it does work, though:

export PYTHONPATH=/usr/lib/pitivi/python

Would seem to be necessary to write that in the global environment somewhere to make it work from the menus.

I experienced this problem on two quite different computers, an IBM Thinkpad R51 and an MSI Wind U130.

It occurs when you install Ubuntu from the alternate CD without having an Internet connection during the installation. I have not tested with the live CD. If you have an Internet connection during install, Pitivi starts fine and the problem in this bug is NOT present.

However, if you do an install with no connection, the problem occurs, and if you later connect to the Internet and do an update and upgrade, it is NOT fixed.

So something seems to be wrong with the packaging in the repositories which is fixed by apt during install, but which is NOT fixed during a normal update&upgrade. Hope this helps someone, I'm sorry I don't have time to investigate further.

I *do* know, though, that this is a real problem - we have a situation where we need to be able to mass install from USB with no access to the Internet. For the time being, I've built in the "export" workaround mentioned in comment #6 in a shell scripts and have the menu command call that instead of calling Pitivi directly. It works, but it will be nicer once this is fixed.
