The error message when Help > Documentation is clicked is:
I am unable to locate the documentation. Either you need to download the mtPaint Handbook from the web site and install it, or you need to set the correct location in the Preferences window.

It would appear that the mtpaint handbook isn't packaged in ubuntu. Having downloaded it from the mtpaint site and installed it, can confirm it works OK.
