Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24-8-generic

Since 7.11 (8.433) fglrx fails to install properly the kernel modules.
A copy of the xorg.0.log is attached for the latest version 8.2.
First it fails to detect the server version:

(WW) fglrx(0): could not detect X server version (query_status=-3)

then it fails to initialise the CMMQS driver:

(EE) fglrx(0): Failed to initialize CMMQS driver

As a result, no dri.

Same issue with gutsy using 8.1, see attached Xorg.0.log

Could this be linked to dkms?
7.11 was the last version installable with m-a and didn't have any problem.

Can you verify whether or not the kernel module was actually loaded when X was starting? If it was, this is an issue upstream in the driver (not DKMS or the packaging). Also, if you installed it directly via l-r-m, DKMS isn't used.

Yes, the module is installed. For hardy it is indeed installed via l-r-m while it was a manual install for gutsy.

As confirmed with the reporter, the module was loaded.

Can you additionally please add to this report a copy of dmesg and whether this card is AGP or PCIe?

Looks like as if you guys are pinning it down already. The card is an AGP card and a copy of syslog is attached. There is an interesting message at [ 80.102412] [fglrx:firegl_init_pcie] *ERROR* Invalid GART type 0.

Still no luck with 8.03, even though the "Failed to initialize CMMQS driver" issue has been solved.

Xorg.0.log:

(EE) fglrx(0): [pcie] Failed to gather memory of size 262144Kb for PCIe. Error (-1014)

dmesg:

[fglrx:firegl_init_pcie] *ERROR* Only power-of-two ring buffer size is supported for PCIe

This is actually closed by the just released restricted-modules package which includes 8.03 for hardy.
