then libtool should be fixed. there is no documented requirement that
the path has to be normalized.

Justification: renders package unusable

Hi,

libffi.la has the following libdir:

libdir='/usr/lib/../lib'

That cuases libtool to add the rpath option when linking against the
library which in turn prevents shlibs to work (since no package
contains /usr/lib/../lib/libffi.so) which in turn miscompiles
e.g. sablevm which in turn causes FTBFS for a lot of java packages.

MfG
 Goswin

Warty avoids this issue by having a dpkg-shlibdeps that resolves symlinks. The
fix is checked into debian cvs, but I don't know if it was uploaded to debian yet.

Yeah, this is fixed in Warty ... looks like Goswin tripped the same bug as us
and lied in his bug report (the actual libdir is /usr/lib64/../lib or
something); our dpkg-shlibdeps is more intelligent about this.

I don't think it's a libtool bug either, Garbage-In-Garbage-Out.

I haven't punted the fix to Debian yet, am waiting until post-sarge before
another dpkg so the release managers don't have my balls for dinner.

Given that the bug in libffi3-dev has been resolved, I don't see any
reason that this bug in libtool should still be considered grave.

Thanks,
