Without logs, triaging this will be taking a shot in the dark. Please execute "apport-collect BUGNUMBER" so that the relevant logs end up here.

In the small amount of previously provided information, the root cause is clearly stated. "KXL error message" means that the issue isn't with the game itself, but with libkxl0, and by proxy, KXL itself.

The binary is libkxl0. Can be found in the Precise Repos @ http://packages.ubuntu.com/source/precise/kxl.

Hope this clears that up.

I thought I wrote a comment last week about this, but I must have forgotten to hit the post button or something...

Anyway, one can get around the "no sound card" error by reverting the 40_nonlinux.diff patch and using padsp. However, that only produce a different error (buffer overflow) and no sound, so I'm not sure if that's "progress" or not.

Do we know if libkxl is still actively maintained by the Debian Games Team? Conversations about fixing this in Debian have been going on for several years, and there hasn't been any forward progress made on it. kxl hasn't been updated since late 2012, and the change from 1.1.7-14 to 1.1.7-16 only addressed an issue relating to using linux headers where they are inappropriate.

Debian still builds their kernel with snd-pcm-oss module, so they don't have to use padsp. I'm actually running Debian sid as my main distro and I just verified sound works fine here after loading snd-pcm-oss...

Okay, so the issue here then is with 'buntu's packaging of kxl.

Part of it is the packaging, but even after the patch is reverted and geki3 finds the soundcard, it still gives an error when running with padsp.
