This is a very troublesome problem for me as well.

And what is worse, some things like hsqldb where the password is blank, it won't let me in even if I try to force it to work like this. It clearly connected perfectly and then spits out an error message????

The problem is on line 232 of src/henplus/HenPlus.java, which has 'opt.hasOption("help")' instead of the correct 'line.hasOption("help")'.

Wow. I just installed henplus on intrepid and I find out that this fix still has not been applied (4 months later). It is quite annoying to have to go around telling people to manually go and install and/download henplus from sourceforge and manually build because the repository still has this 4 character typo in it.

If somebody can provide me with instructions on how to replace the repository with a working version I'll gladly do it. But it is quite embarrassing to have to explain that this is just the level of support that comes with open source software.

we just released henplus version 0.9.8, which addresses this issue. So you can bump the version to fix this issue.

I also have this problem in Jaunty, and it's not fixed in Karmic either... same version of the package and same problem with the latest Karmic updates as of today.

This is a shame, because this is a useful tool that has been completely broken and unusable for several releases now. There appears to be a fix, but there has been no progress on actually getting a fixed version into any repos.

What needs to be done to get this moving? If no one wants to take on the job of fixing it, maybe it should just be removed, since it's pointless to have it in the repos when it can't actually be used.

agreed - can someone please either fix it, bump the version for Karmic, remove it from the repo altogether, or let someone who cares maintain the package. Maintaining the status quo is just making Ubuntu look stupid.

I concur. I've been waiting for this for quite awhile too. 0.9.7 (on Solaris 10) works for me, but 0.9.7-2 on Jaunty does not.

Thanks so much, Roman!

I use this all the time at work, on Solaris. I can vouch that your fix
works on my Linux system at work (karmic) AND at home (lucid). I can
finally throw the old version *.deb I had been saving!

Roman, I just tried your version on lucid and karmic, and both of them work for me. I can finally throw out my old *.deb. I use henplus extensively at work to about 30 different JDBC targets (mostly Oracle and MySQL).

Hopefully, everybody else will be as happy with it as I am, and we can close this bug!

doesn't affect me any more. I stopped using Ubuntu.

This (and many other, high profile examples of a similar kind) attitude of the developers towards the community being the sole reason.

Aargh. This just took up an hour of my time.

If this packages is apparently so unimportant that the trivial fix can't be applied for more than two years, could someone just remove the package altogether? That would be better for everyone.

Timo Jyrinki (timo-jyrinki) wrote :

The package is a community maintained package (universe repository), to which no Ubuntu community volunteer developer has unfortunately contributed directly. Since it originates from Debian, and Debian also didn't find anyone to work on the package, it was removed from Debian in September 2011, followed by removal from Ubuntu via auto-synchronization for 12.04.

Since there has been a fixed package available outside of Ubuntu, hopefully someone would volunteer up to join the MOTU https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU in order to push the fixed package into Ubuntu proper.

To lessen duplicate work with Debian, the optimal solution would be to adopt the orphaned package in Debian (while learning also Debian processes of course), which would make henplus automatically available in Ubuntu as well. The orphaning bug in Debian is http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=636731 - a chapter about adoptions at http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/developers-reference/pkgs.html#adopting

Finally, if you do not want to join neither Debian or Ubuntu as a community developer, you can check if the sponsorship process could be applied: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU/Sponsorship/SponsorsQueue - note that if this was the original intention, you should have followed the process in order to get a review on the fixed package.

I understand users would want to have a fixed version of their favorite packages automatically, but the processes need to be followed for it to happen. Furthermore, it needs someone to work on it on their free time (like I do on a handful of Debian/Ubuntu packages). I hope the above helps to understand how both Debian and Ubuntu work.
