Thanks, Joe. That was an interesting and clarifying link. This seems to be the crux of it:

"I don't think worrying about who's going to do something this trivial is our problem."

Too trivial to assign! Ouch.

I've grudgingly worked around this by compiling a version with -P support because I need it and it was the last barrier to moving away from Mandriva, but it remains a thorn in my side.
