Bug Description
Even though the source package contains a patch to build with lua5.1, the configure script isn't updated during the build and therefore the package is built without any lua support at all. This can also be seen from the package dependencies:
Depends: libbz2-1.0, libc6 (>= 2.15), libexpat1 (>= 2.0.1), libfsplib0 (>= 0.9), libgnutls26 (>= 2.12.6.1-0), libgpm2 (>= 1.20.4), libgssapi-krb5-2 (>= 1.10+dfsg~), libidn11 (>= 1.13), libperl5.14 (>= 5.14.2), libtre5, zlib1g (>= 1:1.1.4), elinks-data (= 0.12~pre5-8ubuntu1)

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.
I can confirm that there is no dependency on lua, and this applies to Debian as well, except for some less common architectures (http:// packages. debian. org/sid/ elinks). So it does look likely to me that there is some issue at build time.
I tried rebuilding with after a ./autogen.sh, but this didn't seem to help.
But either way, it looks likely that if this issue is valid then it affects Debian as well, so it would be best fixed in Debian, and then Ubuntu will pick it up on the next merge.
Would you mind verifying the Debian case, and if it is affected then could you file a bug with Debian please?
