This is the same printer which was installed perfectly with no problems under Linux Mint 12. This problem surfaced after I had installed the new Mint-Debian XFCE. The printer did not work and I was, as you can see by my command, setting out to try to get it installed. When, previously, I had tried to print anything (the printer had a green check, and it was the default printer) the only thing I got, after an abnormally long time was this: ****Unable to open the initial device, quitting.

Sorry, I forgot something which might be helpful for you to know. Months ago, when I installed Debian 6.04, which I really wanted to run with, I had this same exact problem. And, unable to find a way around it, I left Debian, and installed Mint 12. So, I believe this is originally a Debian problem which has now migrated to this distro.
