Bug Description

We want to package spice in order to support high-performance remote qemu-kvm desktops. A dependency of spice is the 0.5.1 version of celt. 0.7.1 is packaged in universe, however that is not compatible with 0.5.1.

An ITP has been posted for debian, but rejected. The ITP can be seen at: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=603699. The rationale makes sense for Debian - they won't have a release supporting spice for 2 years anyway.

We have users very much wanting to use spice-enabled qemu-kvm for 12.04, and compatibly so with other distros. That cannot happen without a celt051 library. That means that if we modify our spice packages to use celt0.7.1, then they will not interoperate with a redhat spice server and vice versa.

Working (but not 100% complete - i.e. debian/copyright) packages for the celt051 library (plus the spice and qemu packages using them) can be seen at ppa:serge-hallyn/spice2.

As mentioned by persia, this should be packaged under section oldlibs so that noone else starts developing against it.
