I packaged GeoGebra 3.0, without the InstallAnywhere installer.
What are the license-issues you're talking about? I haven't found any detailed description in the Debian bugtracker.

Just one thing: The GeoGebra devs asked me to remove all attempts to make GeoGebra a part of Ubuntu or Debian. They do not want any GeoGebra DEB package published, which is not maintained by a GeoGebra developer.
Although the GPL grants me thze right to create and publish the packages, I respect this (strange) decision. The GeoGebra team promised to offer a package source for DEB packages which you can use later.
This is also the reason why the package was removed from GetDeb.

It's been a long time since GeoGebra should have been packaged for Ubuntu.

This request was opened almost 3 years ago. GeoGebra is a great GPL tool, increasingly widespread in France on Ubuntu.
But Windows-like installers don't play well on Ubuntu, so we need a DEB package.

If nothing comes out in the next months, many people will be ready to help GeoGebra team.

Really cool! After the GeoGebra Team asked me to stop working on this packaging, I though we would never see it in Debian/Ubuntu.
But thanks to Giovanni Mascellani, the non-free parts in GeoGebra got replaced and a package was created.
So the package is now available in Sid and will be synced to Maverick later.

Hi.

I'm the maintainer for the Debian geogebra package. The Debian package in unstable still needs some minor fixes, but it's nearly to ready.

Unfortunately, upstream isn't very happy about the fact that a package is available outside of their repositories. I'm trying to convince them that an official Debian or Ubuntu package cannot do other than attracting more users, make their live easier and have more testers. Stay tuned!

I'm not totally sure of how the Debian-to-Ubuntu synchronization works. If someone on the Ubuntu side is interested in doing it, he may be also interested in watching out for new versions coming out next days, as I think I'll introduce some changes and fixes.

Upstream has really a very weird policy about distributing their application... But I think for the _users_ it is great to have the package in Debian.
Synchronisation with Ubuntu happens automatically, so we just have to wait :)

No, it is a different one, with full source available and patched to be compliant with Debian and Ubuntu quality standards.

@João: I'm not sure if it makes sense to submit my packaging again... Giovannis work (which is far better than mine, cause I included the non-free parts when I packaged it for GetDeb) will be synced to Ubuntu, so there is less need to have it in GetDeb again.

Cause it is available in Debian, you can simply grab it from a Debian Sid mirror:

I'm not sure if all of GG's new Java dependencies are present in Lucid. I check this at time, but I guess they need to be uploaded to GetDeb too.

Giovanni, do you have any information why the GeoGebra-Developers did not want to have the software packaged for Debian/Ubuntu etc.? (They also asked me to remove the GG package from all personal repositories)

Hi.

I think that upstream developers were mainly worried by the fact that there were many slightly different versions of GeoGebra and users were confused by that. Anyway, now I'm in contact with upstream and discuss with them nearly anything I do with the package. This is also useful for me, because I receive help by the people that know the code at best. Moreover, they want that I publish on the forum the packages I upload, so that their beta testers can test the package as well.

I just uploaded to Debian the last upstream version and will continue to work on it in the next few days (I'll be out of town from July 25th to 31st, without any Internet access). Some things are still missing (the thumbnailer for GNOME, for example) and there could be some bugs.

Matthias, it would be really nice if you could ask the sync also for the next versions of the package. Do you have any preference between syncing each version or doing one big sync at the end? Keep in mind that first former option would permit more testing by people that test maverick, but I don't know the standard procedures in Ubuntu, so the decision it's up to you.

Last question: could you explain me why geogebra is here[1] but not here[2]? (I'm not very confident with Ubuntu release process)

Ah, thanks for the information!

I think the best time to file a sync request is after the Debian-Import-Freeze. Merges with Debian are done automatically, so it makes no sense to ask for a manual merge before the freeze. (see merges.ubuntu.com for pending merges) But it might take some time until a package is merged.
To your second question: This is a little bit weird. AFAIK the index is updated continuously by a script... But it seems that a lot of new packages in the repos do not have an entry yet. (To be specific: _all_ new packages I tried did not have one)
I'll ask in IRC why this happened. (Maybe the index is just updated short before a new Ubuntu version is released...)
Anyway: If the package is listed at Launchpad, it's in the repos. (And this is important!)

Whoops! It was a little bit late yesterday. (Where I thought the freeze
was in July instead of June)
Then I'll write a sync request if you and the GeoGebra devs consider the
package as good for Maverick. (But please not too short before release, the

If the feature freeze in August (it thik the 15th of August) is applied, a feature freeze exception (FFe) is needed instead of a normal sync request to include a new version of GG in Ubuntu Maverick.
