Bug Description

[needs-packaging] dash-privacy-interface

DPI (dash privacy interface) is a GUI to alert users on their first login that they can change the setting about enable/disable online search into the dash. It will launch for each new session of the installed system.

It should be added to the Ubuntu repositories.

Notes: DPI is maintened by ubuntu-fr loco team members (see https://launchpad.net/~dash-privacy-interface-t )

This bug is tagged needs-packaging which identifies it as a request for a new package in Ubuntu. As a part of the managing needs-packaging bug reports specification, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/Specs/NeedsPackagingBugs, all needs-packaging bug reports have Wishlist importance. Subsequently, I'm setting this bug's status to Wishlist.

Hi,

I support totally this bug report. As you know, Ubuntu received recently a Big brother Award because of the searching online possibilities in Ubuntu.

This situation is due to a lack of communication inside Ubuntu. People that install Ubuntu for the first time don't know that informations are transmitted to the Canonical server.

Looking at the privacy policies in the settings is not the first thing a new user thinks to do.

So having a disclaimer with the possibility to opt-in or opt-out the online search is the best way to avoid community saying Ubuntu has a spyware in itselft

Best regards
Winael

Hi,

I support totally this bug report. As a developper of the project, I want Ubuntu to be respectfull of the User's privacy.
This project resolve many problem about the "Ubuntu is spyware attitude": annoucing to the user Data are sent outside his system, annoucing what are the privacy policy, enable/disable directly, how to change this setting later (...).

A new user to a webbrowser, might know data goes somewhere (but moreover, even Mozilla firefox ask for y/n google autocompletion while searching in case user might not even know ). But a new user to Ubuntu, how can he even know about all that ? Nothing can tell him that, he can just suppose it after a first search (so his first search was not so private/aware) or after clicking the small text 'privacy policy at the bottom of the dash'.

I think it provides all the things to make ubuntu safe about 'search everything in the dash' by making the user aware about that; it might change like being in situ, But for the while it is the only app that's do that.

Every Ubunteros (or LoCo on their own iso) should be able to install from the software center (or apt-get) this package on their system to make it better!

I forgot what is the next step.

It would have been too good to push it before the end of life of the ubuntu version supported by dpi.

Now we should do this, at least for the record :'(
