stimulus for storage volume availability (not mounted)

i need a stimulus which triggers when a certain storage volume is available - in my case it's an eSATA drive containing a partition i whish to be automatically mounted when i dock my laptop.

i attempted to write such a stimulus using Gio.VolumeMonitor and connect to the "volume-added" signal, but it seems that VolumeMonitor doesn't trigger any of its signals in cuttlefish, while an example script actually receives those signals.

please note that i currently have rather limited experience with python and i'm quite new to the whole Gobject & Gio stuff
