Bug Description

This is a frequent error pattern in 1.0.0 for .bmp files generated from PDF via ppm:

Cuneiform for Linux 1.0.0

BTW:
The prompt says "Press <Space> to continue execution",
but I need to enter <Space> followed by <Enter>.
Please simplify the behavior of cuneiform.

I am not sure if a release build disables assertions, but this could be one way around it.

N. B. Currently Cuneiform is unmaintained, which basically means that you are out of luck until someone steps up.
