moving 8GB of files to external hdd got lost

i tried to cut and paste few distros, my /tmp partitions is not that big by the way, on the last .iso file it gave an error and an option to skip or cancel, i can't remember now if i clicked skip or cancel, i didn't click retry, but then all of the files were lost and were nowhere to find. I do remember I couldn't download any more stuff because my /tmp was full, so i tried to find the file that the error box mentioned, it was also nowhere to be found, after restart it was all ok, but now i don't do cut anymore i do copy, heh
