Bug Description

When unminimizing Google Chrome (I have version 35.0.1916.153), Chrome does not gain focus and I have to click the window or the taskbar button a second time to focus the window.

This does not occur with any other application or window type that I can tell.

I am using Compiz 0.9.11 with MATE 1.8.0.

I have an older version of Compiz (0.9.7 or 0.9.8, I can't remember offhand) on my computer at work and this same behavior has started to happen on that machine too. (That machine is running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with an older version of MATE.)

I suspect something has changed about the way Chrome identifies itself to the window manager, but I have no idea what that would be or how to investigate. Does anyone have any pointers? I could take a look if someone can point me in the right direction.

Agreed, I have upgraded to Chrome 36 and am still experiencing this issue.

Also, the problem doesn't seem to be isolated to Chrome/Chromium. I noticed the same issue with VLC 2.1.5.

I've seen this happen with VLC, Caja (the MATE file manager), PlayOnLinux and CrossOver (and here I mean the GUI parts, not wine), Libreoffice Writer (minimize and restore a few times and it will glitch)

The weird part is that if you right-click on the taskbar button of the application and choose "unminimize", this does not happen

I can't reproduce the problem with Libreoffice of Caja but I can reproduce the problem every time with Chromium or VLC.

I hadn't noticed that before but this is true for me as well.

I found a solution for the problem. Enable the Workarounds plugin and tick the Keep previews of minimized windows option. It works for me with both Chromium and VLC.

Can anyone else confirm?

I tested this a little more. Whilst the Keep previews option does ensure that Chromium will gain focus after being unmimized, it also causes another problem. Any window which is below the Chromium window when minimized will not gain focus (this includes the desktop window). The space under which the Chromium window used to be will become completely unresponsive. Curiously, this regression applies only to Chromium, not to VLC.

Regarding the problem above with Chromium, this seems to be because of Chromium's window decoration. If you enable the Use system title bars and borders option in Chromium then minimizing with the Keep previews option in Compiz Workarounds will work just fine.

I've also noticed that the unminimizing problem affects the Steam client as well. The Compiz Workarounds fixes the problem for the Steam client.
