WTF?
I would never have upgraded had I known this before. how is it that compiz is more broken in every release of ubuntu?

Sorry for the noise, had been chasing my tail for a while. Evetually figured out I needed more the the compiz-plugins-* packages. No idea why that package went awol overnight but all working now.
Would just delete the above post if possible, but that isn't how bug tracking works :)
This bug is stopping me from upgrading to ubuntu 12.10. I need distinct wallpapers for distinct workspaces for my work, in order to partition, by visual cue, the different things I need to do.
