Looking at the ring code, text is not a requirement. It's optional.

no longer affects: compiz-ring-plugin

It is just used for the text in the middle of the screen in ring which is fairly optional.

I just reported it since if there is no text plugin loaded it does not appear and it says:
compiz (ring) - Warn: No compatible text plugin loaded
compiz (core) - Error: Plugin 'text' not loaded.

The Ring plugin works but compiz-fusion-plugins-main-0.9.7.0.orig/ring/CMakeLists.txt says:
compiz_plugin (ring PLUGINDEPS composite opengl text)

which made me believe that is was a dependency.

Should core not mention an error then if it's truly optinal?

micove: I agree calling it an "Error" is confusing and misleading. Please log that as a separate bug. This bug already contains more disparate issues than it should :)
