Bug Description

Binary package hint: unity

With multiple monitors, expo/spread mode (Alt-Shift-Up or Win-W) displays all windows tiles, but only on one (physical) screen, and not always the same. This is confusing and not very usable. A better alternative could be to display each window tile on the screen they belong to.

The Canonical Design team has released a spec pertaining to implementing such behavior:
from https://docs.google.com/a/canonical.com/document/d/1aHvJ-iIw-59bXTYBmIhQqEx0za2h9jpFE_RhZ2VOvJc/edit?authkey=CJO5wPkH&hl=en_GB

section 2.9:

--
The Spread is also shown on all displays. Currently, all window previews for a spread are gathered together and shown on a single display. If there are application windows on a different display, they are summoned onto the display with the Launcher, and returned to their original display when clicked.

As an interim solution for 12.04, and leading into the fully designed solution, the Spread view on each display will now only show those windows which belong on that display, across all workspaces, including minimised windows. A window ‘belongs’ to a display if it is either fully contained within, or has the majority of it’s area inside, that display.
--

The spec also includes diagrams of how it should be implemented.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version. When you test it and it is still an issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running apport-collect <bug #> and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

The behaviour is still the same as what I described in Ubuntu 11.10

When I test it the spread appears on the monitor that has focus (it involves having a window focused, not just having the mouse present). Does that not happen for you?

Yes, that's what happen. This bug was a suggestion to improve this -- a feature wish.
