Were you using putty to connect to your ubuntu machine?

I have the same problem, connecting with Putty.

I am running an Ubuntu Server 12.04.2 LTS inside a VM in VirtualBox
The pagecode was configured to ISO-8859-1.
After to change pagecode to UTF-8, I had no more issues. I had no issues when connected locally as expected.

Yeah, this is expected, c-n-f is sensitive to incorrect encoding (declared vs actually used). Thanks

Sorry! I forgot to say in my previous comment: I was using Putty. Its settings had pagecode set to ISO-8859-1...

Thanks, this confirms the remote use-case. I guess we should try to
convince putty upstream to use UTF-8 by default if year > 2010 :P
