White background instead of transparency on all image thumnails

Bug Description
Images such as png or svgs which have transparent backgrounds appear in the example client with while backgrounds.
This is due to the way the scaling also does the merging. The merge is none alpha sensitive and probably strips away the alpha before combining the images.
