Bug Description

Currently only binlog_format=ROW replication is supported. This restriction should be relaxed, to begin with enable replication with binlog_format=STATEMENT setting.

Startup checks still explicitly require binlog_format to be ROW. If STATEMENT replication format is supported, those checks must be removed. See lp:803442

Also as of 0.8.1 binlog_format defaults to ROW due to the above issue. This change also needs to be rolled back (r3111).
