Indicate presence state in the roster using some wallpaper text for example. The URL shows more ideas.

On the mac I already have something very similar, although the proposition to dim the text is technically not feasible and furthermore looks terrible. The attached shot shows the background text. It has faitly low contrast and shows only if background image. "Borta" is Swedish for "Away". ALso any status text is displayed. It should be straightforward to add this to other platforms as well, but it relies on GDI+ and cairo graphics.
