HTTP(S) proxy settings of the system should be automatically detected and applied as the default settings.

There should also be standard API on Mac OS X to find out HTTP or SOCKS proxy settings.
On other POSIX systems, you could either try to read HTTP_PROXY enviromental variable, or read Gnome/KDE settings.
