Bug Description

nano, vi, and if a user installs vim, do not work. The cursor location displayed in any editor does not match the actual location in the file. Sometimes the cursor location displayed in any editor does match the actual location in the file and an editor can be used.
This is true for ubuntu 23.10 and 24.04.

The problem is not only with the editors but it is also with the console connection. Both the editors and the terminal seem to work properly for the first hour or couple of hours, then they become insane to use.

The file info for the 24.04 image is:
$ ls -1l noble-server-cloudimg-amd64.img
-rw-rw-r-- 1 x x 489684992 Apr 6 13:29 noble-server-cloudimg-amd64.img
$ md5sum noble-server-cloudimg-amd64.img
7389041c488d1c996ccf0640bb16de5e noble-server-cloudimg-amd64.img

I have no idea what the 23.10 image was.

Edit: This occurs on a host Ubuntu 23.10 using either konsole or gnome-terminal, whereby both of these are using default settings.

could you explain the environment where you're seeing this occur? Is this in an openstack deployment, a local VM, or in a specific cloud?

I haven't tried a reproducer yet, and the key of "running for more than a couple hours" seems important. So having a file open, on a guest, connected over SSH, eventually the cursor and real location differ?

I can try this locally on a noble laptop, and see what happens, but that doesn't seem like a correct reproducer. Could be something related to the connection as well?
