Bug Description

Steps to verify:

Run checkbox and get to the alsa_record_playback_external test
Open sound prefs and set output volume to maximum
click Test
Notice that it sets output volume far below 100%

because this sets the settings so low, I am unable to actually hear the recorded sound when its played back.

Volume is set at 50%, which depending on the particular machine, may be too low; on some, I'm able to hear it, but on others the sound is more faint.

We can potentially change this to something louder by adjusting the value in the job definition. For the automated audio tests I've been using 70% volume, which works fine, and should alleviate this problem.
