Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image

I upgraded to the latest gutsy (Sept 25 ~6pm).
When prompted to reboot, I did so.
When the boot process tried to display the splash screen, my monitor turned off. I left it for about 20 minutes to see if it recovered, then hit Ctrl+Alt+Del to reboot.
After removing the "quiet" and "splash" boot options in grub, I tried it again. This time it spent a bunch of time poking at the SATA controller, got confused, and bailed out to a busybox prompt.

I'm still able to boot my system using the 2.6.20 kernel. The issue with the splash screen turning the monitor off had been happening with Feisty too (requiring removing "splash" as a work around).

I've got an ABIT AN52 motherboard:

Here's a photo of the boot process, showing the SATA errors.

And here's that busybox prompt it ends up with. After this it prints a couple more SATA errors on top of the prompt. Sorry for the blurry camera-phone photo, but I think it's enough to see what's going on.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Could you please provide the full output of 'lspci -vvnn' from either Gutsy or Feisty? Thanks in advance.

Maybe it's just a guess, but there where similar regressions for HighPoint controllers in 2.6.22, which where fixed in 2.6.23. Maybe you should try to compile 2.6.23 Debian style (with deb generation) and then report back if it works or not.

First useful Google hit was http://www.howtoforge.com/kernel_compilation_debian_etch. Propably there are some doc on Ubuntu wiki too for this.

P.S. Splash turning monitor off means it has wrongly detected resolution for it. It has nothing to do with SATA controller, just for clarification.

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.
