kubernetes dashboard doesn't work on 1.16

logging into the dasboard on a 1.16 CK results in a 404 and immediate return to the login page. The user is actually logged in, but the code just goes back to the previous page on a 404 error. The user can then hit endpoints like http://localhost:8001/api/v1/namespaces/kube-system/services/https:kubernetes-dashboard:/proxy/#!/cronjob?namespace=default and http://localhost:8001/api/v1/namespaces/kube-system/services/https:kubernetes-dashboard:/proxy/#!/namespace?namespace=default, but others do not work such as http://localhost:8001/api/v1/namespaces/kube-system/services/https:kubernetes-dashboard:/proxy/#!/deployment?namespace=default.

The latest stable release of the dashboard, 1.10.1, says it doesn't work with k8s 1.13 but doesn't mention anything higher revision. The latest beta, 2.0.4, says it works on k8s 1.15, but makes no mention of k8s 1.16.
