In an environment that has access to the internet through the proxy I got an issue with ntp.ubuntu.com:

a fresh deployed machine without internet access goes in error state: "hook failed: leader-elected", upgrade from older version works fine

the proposed change looks useful, but if NTP is required at this step (usually NTP is configured from a subordinate charm) a new option for a custom NTP server should be added

Hi, I am seeing the same issue on a proxied env.
Effectively, it means any air-gapped deployment, Graylog won't work.

I understand what we are trying to do with by going to sock.connect and then discovering what is the iface with the default route.

However, we should be using built-in Python for that instead of trying to reach an address that may not be accessible 100% of the time.

I'd suggest we use sth like netifaces for this discovery.
