Cardapio doesn't have an icon

Or does it...? It seems to me that it does not and we will at some point need one. For example, I'm working on Docky's Helper for Cardapio and it will need an icon. GnoMenu, for instance, has an orange paw image.

Generally, this seems like a pretty big usability issue - the 'about Cardapio' window, future website, even Launchpad - all of those could use a real trademark icon.

I kind of does. Jan-Christoph made the icon you see on the top-left of this page, and even posted it in several sizes. I just haven't gotten around to add it to Cardapio. I will do so before the next PPA release. Thanks for the reminder.

BTW. It seems to me that we have a branding problem. This icon is "boring" and doesn't even really tell you what Cardapio is (sorry Jan). It looks more like Tracker's icon.

Pawel, you‘re right. I didn‘t think that Cardapio should have a distinguished icon because it is just a utility and will have the distribution logo as icon anyway – that‘s why I made such a pragmatic one which combines menu and search (see bug 625246). While the distribution icon point might be true for the panel, it‘s not for Docky etc. where a more simple icon would be needed.

On the other hand, there have been lengthy discussions about the problem of branding the »Applications« menu with the distribution logo. Therefore it will be best if we have an aesthetic icon for Cardapio that we use everywhere – on Launchpad, in the about dialog, in the panel, in Docky …

I think that this is important. If we wish to gain more users, we need to aim at those less technical "it's-all-about-the-look" kind of people too. After all, Clementine's icon is one of the reasons I'm using it. :)

With the requirement that this logo has to work in very different situations such as Launchpad site, panel applet, Docky applet etc. I started with some sketches: http://gitorious.org/jancborchardt/cardapio/blobs/master/icon%20sketches.jpg

The photo quality is not good but you should get the gist. I did them a few days a go, had a favorite then and it still is (not going to tell you yet though :).

I like the C with the magnifying glass and big black dot inside. ;} If that's what it really represents... It's not mindblowing but it's a start definitely!

Oh, and I hate menus and arrows. ;)
