Bug Description
The summary is a little misleading here but I couldn't find a better way of putting it.
In recent usability testing, participants commented that 'being given a link to click in an email was easier'.
The verification code step is unusual and unexpected as well as being harder from an interaction point of view. We can make the sign up process hard for automated scripts without making it too much of a struggle for human beings.
What are the options here from a technical perspective? This is definitely a bug that will need discussion before a solution should be implemented.

Some background: we give both a link and a confirmation code. Either
may be used to complete the process. The link is for the easy case
where the user receives the e-mail on the same computer that they began
the process. The confirmation code is for users who receive the e-mail
on, for example, a mobile device, but initiated the process on their
desktop.
