Ubuntu 17.04 unity8
OSK the emoticons are monochrome
enable OSK, from system settings or from the indicators
open kate or whatever app that can bring up OSK
change to emoticons
type random emoticons
see attached screenshot

ok, so looks like i didn't have fonts-emojione installed
apt install fonts-emojione
much better now
