Bug Description

Contrary to other login problems with Unity 8 (as installed by default in Ubuntu 16.10), I'm not getting a black screen when trying to log in. After entering my password the login screen just sort of hangs; I'm left with the login GUI (which is frozen) and the top panel (which I can use) to display the suspend / restart options. I left it running for quite a while, but nothing happened. I can log in to the default environment easily.

I'm running a System 76 Meerkat, having upgraded from Ubuntu 16.04 without wiping my system drive.

Here you go, this should be everything you asked for.

If there's any other way I can help, let me know.

I also ran the command you asked, so hopefully everything's in order.

Regards,
Nathan

Thanks, but the required info is still missing.

The critical file from 15 October unity-system-compositor.log is zero bytes, and your unity8 logs have not been touched since 5 October. So it sounds like unity-system-compositor.log will hold the answer. Please try copying it again as root (sudo).

Oh! It looks like your problem might simply be that the default graphics drivers are not installed...

Please run:
   sudo apt install mir-graphics-drivers-desktop
and then reboot/try again.
