Black screen on connecting to Miracast stick

I have a rather generic Miracast dongle (https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B018Q10GOO/ref=pe_385721_142365271_TE_dp_2) where the model is listed as VicTsing.

In my M10, if I do:
sudo service aethercast restart
aethercast

Then, within aethercast:
enable
scan
connect [MAC address]

OR:

use the wireless display option available from OTA-12

The dongle is accepting the connection, the monitor screen goes black, the M10 is ready to be used as a touch pad, but then nothing. A black screen. The only way to regain control of my M10 is to pull the plug on the USB dongle. Then my M10 returns to normal.

Same issue with BQ Aquaris M10 FHD with OTA 12 and this miracast dongle: http://www.emtec-international.com/nl-eu/mirror-dongle. Installed latest firmware on dongle (v8.0). It now connects, but also with black screen.

Also made the connection with an android device first as described here:

"NOTE: To connect with the Microsoft WiFi Display dongle you have to connect it with an Android device currently first before Ubuntu is being able to stream properly to it. Otherwise you will just get a black screen."
There is no clear comment on why this would make a difference. Should the connection with the Android tablet be disconnected first or is it supposed to be 'hijacked'??

Hard to find documentation on this feature.

We've landed some important fixes in rc-proposed which will be released with OTA 13 which should improve the general device compatibility. Can you please retest with either current rc-proposed or OTA 13 when it is released?

Tested with current rc-proposed (29th Aug) and I get the message:

'This device failed to connect to DONGLE-1105D4'

(DONGLE-1105D4 being my cheapo Miracast dongle)

I tap 'OK' and the option for my dongle (in the list) is greyed out with 'Not connected' below the name.

Tried with ATA-13 on M10. Still no success.
