Bug Description

Push notifications for telegram / gmail can be delayed or not appear at all.

For example a telegram message arrived at 15.01pm and the notification arrived at 16.32pm.

Currently using an MX4 with OTA7.

Are there any logs that will help?

Hi Pat,

If I am honest, the behaviour I am seeing is so unpredictable I'm not sure how it behaves.

Sometimes notifications appear, sometimes they don't. Some appear when I unlock the device, some play a notification sound when the device is locked.

This bug report is more aimed at the fact that some notifications don't arrive at all and some arrive late, hours after the message has been read on the device.

I know its not much use but I'm not sure what I can provide to be more useful.

Using arale on rc-proposed, same issue:

Message in telegram.
Telegram app closed.
No notification.
I open telegram, open a group to see new incoming message.
I close telegram.
I randomly receive those messages (already read) notification.
Some message have then delayed notification, some message no notification at all.

Please ask me log files if needed

I just rebooted my device.

Two messag was reveived and read in a telegram grouo.
I open group to anwser (talking about this bug)
I send my message... I focus app scope
Screen is not locked and tadaa, i get a notification, and a minute later, without screen locked, the 2nd notification (both about those two message received and read before the rebooot)

I beleive this is not about bug #1515344

Telegram app is not smart enough (though current source could enable adding this behavior) to figure it should not show notifications for messages that have been already read. This is usually fine if notifications arrive properly (usually only by accident you could open Telegram, read a just-received message [for which you didn't see a notification], and close Telegram *before* the push notification arrives). But it's not fine when push messages are delayed, in which case it's possible to notice this behavior.

"I randomly receive those messages (already read) notification.
Some message have then delayed notification, some message no notification at all."

You "randomly" receive 'already read' message notifications depending on when they've been sent and if you've read them *and* backgrounded or killed the Telegram app. Notification may arrive delayed (for which the problem can be anywhere between Telegram itself, through our push infrastructure, to push daemon on the device), but it would be good to understand if, in fact, some message notifications don't arrive at all, or you just happen to foreground Telegram when you expect those notifications. You may know this, but for clarification I'll state that notifications will not show when Telegram is in foreground* (which means if some arrive, and you foreground Telegram, the following ones won't show).

* with the exception of bug #1515344 -- I thought originally I filed the bug, but essentially the problem was then the phone is locked *AND* the app (for which notifications you expect) is in foreground. In this specific case, they would not show/blip/arrive. If the phone was locked, but the app was not in foreground, I think it worked fine. Anyway, just providing as much details as I can.

@karni for me its quite unpredictable. Some notifications don't arrive some are an hour late. Could it be a problem with the server?

I first noticed this problem when I was using sils caxton. I was sending myself push notifications for email from my home server and I noticed that some notifications didn't arrive and sometimes a number of them arrived at once spanning several hours of notifications. Thats what makes me think its a server issue. Just speculating...

That's an important detail. Delayed notifications from Telegram *and* Caxton rule out Telegram server's blame and seems to point to an issue on our push infra side.

No, only one team within Canonical (or even less than that) would have access to push server instances.

Ubuntu push checks for status every five minutes. Does this correspond with
the delay you are experiencing?

If so, the fix is for you to decide the status check interval yourself via
System Settings, not a fix in Ubuntu push.

I received two notifications since my last message, but they were duplicates of notifications received earlier this day. I am guessing something is broken in Ubuntu push servers that relay messages, but I am just speculating as people I chatted with report no problems with Telegram on Android, everything works fine for them. SMS and Gmail notifications seem to work fine.

But I hope this can be fixed soon as having broken Telegram is a big issue for people that use Ubuntu phones as their daily drivers.

Supposedly there have been some issues on Telegram end, and they have been addressed this last Sunday. I'm getting notifications now reliaby for Telegram, but some users (e.g. mzanetti) still reports ~5 min delays. I have requested further feedback on Telegram and inquired whether we should keep digging, or it's still something on their end. I have also heard users have reported slowness on other platforms (I haven't experienced it, so can't confirm that bit).
