Bug Description

When attempting to use a phone number that is protected by two-step verification, the app will get stuck at a white screen and print this to the log file:

tg.core.session: error for query "564b4c8100000008" : 400 : "PHONE_PASSWORD_PROTECTED"
qml: auth error: PHONE_PASSWORD_PROTECTED

I also get an SMS saying that I'm "using an outdated app that doesn't support 2-step verification. Please update your app to log in to Telegram."

Correct. We currently don't have this on the roadmap, so I'm afraid I can't give you any ETA.

Ugh, so looks like Telegram is useless for now...

Oh well, at least the developers know about it.

If I understand it correctly, 2fa for telegram is: password + recovery email register procedure.

Correct.

But the version available for Ubuntu (mobile devices) does not support Telegram accounts which are protected in this way...

This is the main thing that is preventing me from moving to my Ubuntu phone for serious use. I need to get Telegram alerts and of course I use two-part authentication. So for the moment, I'm having to continue to carry my Android phone around.

As a temporary workaround, you can disable two-step auth, log in and then enable it again. It's a fairly bad workaround, but it shouldn't pose a security risk as long as you enable it immediately afterwards.

This is still an issue for me; Telegram still does not work for me...

With a password-protected Telegram account, I try to run Telegram and it sits on the "loading" screen (with the Telegram logo in the middle) for approximately one minute, then Telegram automatically closes (i.e. no error message, as was previously the case).

Hello @Gregory,
could you please paste the screenshot of what you mentioned "the Telegram logo in the middle",
so that let's see if I can confirm such the symptom for you,
thanks.

As per the above, Telegram crashes on loading, when trying to use a password-protected account.

--

Reproduce:
- Sign-in to Telegram using an account that is "cloud" password protected (you can enable this from the official computer clients).

Result:
- Telegram displays the "loading" screen, then crashes after approximately one minute.

Expectation:
- That users are able to sign-in to and otherwise use Telegram for Ubuntu (Touch), even with password-protected accounts.

I can confirm this error (missing feature) for OTA14 on BQ Aquarius 4.5.
a) On a fresh installation, you get stuck when entering the SMS code
b) On an existing installation, the App stucks after starting it with a white screen
Of course, switching off 2FA is unacceptable.

Work-around: use the WebTelegram App instead.
