Microphone unpredictable when headphone socket in use

Since the bluetooth is currently not up to scratch I link my phone to the car stereo via a jack lead, audio only no mic. Under normal use conditions the phone audio would be relayed to the stereo but it would continue to use the built in mic.

It is a 50/50 gamble as to whether the microphone works or not, half the time the other person can't hear me and this can only be resolved by rebooting the phone.

I have this issue with standard headphones; sometimes they can hear me when I speak through the mouthpiece and sometimes not. Confirming.
